Before You Know It
One day
You’re in a class
Because your last name starts with B
And before you know it
You’re talking and drawing dragons
With someone whose last name starts with B
One day
You’re standing alone
Because you had no one to stand with
And before you know it
You’re singing and fangirling
With someone who had no one to stand with
One day
You’re part of a chorus of two
Because you tried out for the play and barely got in
And before you know it
You’re writing and messaging
With someone who was part of a chorus of two
It’s strange how it works
And the real oddity is that
If my last name started with Z
If my best friend hadn’t moved and left me alone
If I hadn’t auditioned for that play
I wouldn’t have nearly as many friends as I do
It’s hard to think about
What would have happened
If I hadn’t been there to meet
The people who are close to me now.
