The Land Remembers
After it’s over, and there’s no one to tell the story to,
The memory fades.
The grass grows back,
But the land remembers.
When the people walk away, like they’re supposed to do,
At the end of the day,
After the attack,
The land remembers.
And should there be no consequences
After what we’ve done?
We’ve buried our values, we’ve let them drown
Instead of giving them a place to stay.
What do we do
When we’ve beat ourselves senseless
And let ourselves down?
We call it “advancing” but who likes it this way?
We have little left.
Just the earth and the makeup we gave it.
But when we leave
Who will be there to receive it?
I say we burn it all down
Until there’s nothing but embers
Because in the end,
Only the land remembers.
