You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

I try to scream my demons out,
I feel my eyes try to hide from what I've done,
I sense the cold of the hospital room consume me,
I feel my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth,
I still smell the drug that owns me now,

She hears his screams of paranoia echo through the halls,
She watches the spark in his eyes fade and she knew it was time,
She felt the warmth of his body leave,
She could taste her salty tears,
She smelled the drug that took him from her.

The doctor placed a sheet over the mans head to silent his former screams,
He closed the man's eyes from the sight of his old life,
He felt the cold of the man as he rolled him down the hall,
He swallowed the pain of seeing this too many times before,
He scrubbed the scent of the drug off the man's scarred skin.

The preacher spoke of a man he never knew,
He watched the woman in tears, knowing this was his end was too much to bear,
He listened to everyone's last good-byes,
He took a long breath as they lowered the man down,
The scent of the drug no longer lingered.

I try to scream but no sound escapes,
I can see everyone but they can't see me,
I am the chill you feel when you are alone,
I no longer crave the drug that that enslaved me,
I smell the drug that stole my life,
but now it is my wife who is holding the needle.
