Sincerely, the Back Ground Noise
Whoever says the rhyme,
“Sticks and Stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
has never been called ugly.
has never been told to kill themselves.
has never been told they don’t matter.
has never been told anything less of themselves.
waste.
stupid.
loser.
worthless.
nothing.
pathetic.
annoying.
sl*t.
freak.
geek.
dork.
mistake.
They’ve obviously never been
Just background noise.
Never had to sit silently suffering
as the insults fly like bullets,
all striking our hearts, placing bets on
how
long
until
we
break.
Never had to fall, where no one would hear us,
broken, but forced to pick ourselves up every day,
because they can’t win, although they almost do.
We even start to believe them,
that we’re ugly.
that we should kill ourselves.
that we don’t matter.
that we are so much less than we are.
waste.
stupid.
loser.
worthless.
nothing.
pathetic.
annoying.
sl*t.
freak.
geek.
dork.
mistake.
We believe the lies because no one tells us differently.
Because no one hears.
Because we don’t mean anything, we’re
Just background noise.
Strangled cries dying to be heard
by someone.
Anyone.
We have a voice, all of us.
Yet no one hears
because after all,
we're just back ground noise, right?
At least that's the idea that you've put in our heads so congratulations.
You think you've one, don't you?
Sincerely, the back ground noise.
