"What if the person in the puddle is real, and you're just a reflection?" -Calvin & Hobbes

The creases in my skin
Mark the patterns of my
Slipping dreams
The sunlight from the window
Pools
Fills my sleepy creases
The ones deep in my arms
Lap up the streaming honey
And it spills over
To replenish the spaces between my ribs
Draping the brittle ridges of my breathing bones

When the corners of my eyes have done their time
And I grasp my consciousness
I remember that this is not my life
These camel colored sheets that have molded my sleeping skin
Will not bring me to the crevice of your shoulder
Where I fell in love with the nape of your neck
And your fingers mapped out all my imperfections
To save me the trouble of finding them myself

The twine that once held us together
Unraveled
We watched the spool unwind
Until you couldn’t see Chicago
And I spent too many cigarettes, too much coffee
Waiting for you to invite me back
To the crevice in your shoulder

This morning
In my camel colored sheets
Arms creased
You asked me back
No conditions
“But nothing”
