A little blond girl of three
Picked up a dictionary
And started to read (sort of)
She imagined what she would do
If maybe the sky wasn’t blue
And what else could be new (or even just different)
People would ask her why
But the only reason she could find

Time flew by with hardly a glance
The girl was six and started to dance
Absolutely every time she got the change (even in the parking lot)
Whenever someone would look
She had her nose in a book
Learning new things had her hooked (well, except for math)

The girl was in band and the top of her class
And a role in the play was all but in her grasp (auditions would be the judge of that)
Braces were added to her look
And answers to science questions was all it took
For people to look past her pile of books (everyone knew her for being smart)

Summers came and went
And the teenage girl was bent
On adding to her list of achievements (grades are nice, but she wanted a life too)
She quit the band and started to run
She wanted to be number one
And decided that running was more fun (she was better at it anyway)

Her story was not over yet
But still she was starting to fret
That there were too many chances she’d never get (living on the edge wasn’t her thing)
One day she started to think
That maybe if she stopped to just blink
She’d stop trying to over-think (and maybe just enjoy life a little)
People would ask her what to do
And tried to help, but said “That’s just me, and I’m not you”
She finally knew who she was
And she flew
