One Heart, Healed by Another
When I was a young girl
My mom and I were talking about her high school sweetheart
Her face fell
Her eyes went dark
She whispered the word to me like a curse
Like just saying it was a sin
"Gay."
And I gasped
Not because I was shocked
Not because I was scared
But because I didn't understand
When I was a young girl
I had a dream about my best friend
My heart leaped
My eyes shone
I thought the word to myself like it was my savior
Like just thinking it lit me up
"Love."
And my mother gasped
Not because she was shocked
Not because she was scared
But because she didn't understand
And now I'm a young woman
And I'm walking down the isle with my best friend
My breath hitches
My dress flutters
I'm looking at her like she is my world
Like I can no longer live a life without her
"Miracle."
And my mother is not there
Not because she is shocked
And not because she is scared
But because she will never understand
