As We Bloom.
When five year olds pick flowers
they find a favorite color
and pick until the sun goes to sleep.
But when I pick flowers
I'm pricked with thorns from the grayest stems
that leave rosy stems between my fingerprints.
Everything is simpler
when you're not tall enough to see
that stars are just balls of fire
and even the galaxy can leave blisters
on the parts you leave open to damage.
And it's easier to kiss when your lips aren't chapped
with frigid words and well kept secrets.
I'm sure I've lived too long to ever be beautiful again.
