When your Letter Came
One morning, I was standing at the threshold of my house,
When I heard the steps of a postman approaching,
Joy and Hope in me Arose,
As my eyes searched for your letter in his satchel brimming,
With words of Love and partings and farewell,
Or something that the recipient could never foretell.
He drew near and espying my hopeful eyes,
Started to search for my letter at once,
Could anyone at the moment my anxiety surmise?
My face shone brighter than a million suns.
Alas! Joy is but ephemeral, particularly to those who covet it, they say,
“Been a Blunder, madam”, the postman announced,
“I think I came the wrong way.”
I waited for your letter presumably all my life,
Seasons went and came by, things remained the same,
For me.
I saw the neighbour’s daughters grow into young maidens, into loving mothers,
But your letter never came.
It did come one day,
The letter, and it came from you,
Although the heaven was my abode then,
My dreams had come true.
All my life, to my love I was true,
And it pleases me to know that,
You were too.
