In the Background

I hide my face
And always look down.
My thoughts are rampant,
But I keep them to myself.
I stare at the written word,
They are only random lines I cannot decipher.
Not meant to be seen or heard,
I wash the floor in silence.
I listen to your stringing words
About my lack of skills and grace.
I bite my uncolored lips,
And stare at my plain gray shirt,
Until you stop. I nod and agree,
Like always.
My thoughts will never matter,
My voice will only be whispers,
The hopes I have will go unanswered,
And my dreams will go unheard.
I was born to be a background,
The wallflower of the bouquet.
My face will not impress,
I will always wear my simple dress,
Have babies and please the man;
Cook and clean and wash forever,
Watching the world from the window,
This is my life forever-
For I am just a girl.

The author's comments:
I wanted to shine light on the plights of many girls in third world countries all over the world. I hope that my poem inspires others to help these girls and hopefully together, the world can end child marriage and sex slavery, and give these girls an education and a brighter future.
