The Sound
I will never forget that sound.
The sound of people’s lives falling, falling.
Burning.
The sound of pain.
The sound of despair.
The sound of the grieving.
I will never forget that sound.
The sound that frightened my heart into galloping faster.
The sound that caused me to stop looking and stop thinking.
The sound of withering hope.
The sound of no more chances.
The sound of the ones who stopped clinging.
I will never forget that sound.
The sound that made me feel lost.
The sound that made her give me a hug, even though I saw tears on her face.
The sound of seven-hundred girls screaming for their sister to come back to them.
Even though they knew she couldn’t.
