Goodbye To My Childhood Treasure
It seemed so long ago,
The day that you were brought home.
A small and wiggly thing you were
Looking up with eyes that said you needed me so.
As I grew, time changed me, and I realized I needed you too.
Time flew by, like the blink of an eye,
As I moved from child to adult.
My eyes were opened to the real world,
But you were always there to bring me home.
When times became too much, and there was no one else to turn to,
I poured my soul into a silent listener, a friend without words.
Though distance will separate us, and mountains may move,
As my body grows old,
The lessons you taught me,
Discipline, love, and not to judge,
Will stay forever more.
Whenever I think of you, even on that last day,
When the vet told me there was nothing left for me to do,
Your same soft eyes from years ago, told me, it’s ok, it’s time for me to go.
Time slipped by, and your eyes dulled,
The pain slowly increased inside of me and the tears flowed.
The minutes passed by, just you and me, as I watched your heart slow.
It stopped, and I was told to take you home.
The last thread of my childhood had been cut.
Time had changed you, into a shell of what you were,
Age had not treated you well.
But the image that will forever stay in my mind
Will always be when you first looked at me with those eyes that said,
You were mine.
