last sunday
helping you move your life
down the road
carrying wardrobes full of years and world and whatnot
singing that sweet autumn jazz as time flashes by
in red green gold afternoonlight
you know, i thought this day would never come
i somehow thought we'd be forever young
carrying you on my back through the hallways at school,
laughing and roaring, not paying our dues
and here you are now
at the foot of your stairs
talking diesel and rent and new things
car keys in hand
leaving me behind
with every step you take into the world
and i can't even say i'm terrified
because it's always been my role to be the brave one
and grin like hell in the middle of all this
change.
