Jeans
I suppose I'm left to my wandering thoughts
A laundry list of need to do's
I think of my life in just a few weeks
It's crazy how much a little time can bring a lot of change
More than one knows what to do with
Jingling around in the front pocket of worn Levi's
The remains of something momentarily pleasurable
Leaving the present with nothing more than consumer's remorse and sinking jeans
The only thing left to do is to set the coins down on a coffee table
(in the corner where they'll sit with all the other stuff you never look at; so it's like it isn't really there),
Slide your fingers through the belt loops
And pick up the blues
Noticing the newfound lightness
A shift in weight
Waiting for new things to collect on the inseams
(A shell or some hard candy or a handwritten note, maybe),
And begin the walk to the next room
Out the door
Onto the street
Across town
Into that space
Wherever it is
That makes your jeans feel most comfortable.
