The Number Board
The numbers,
They dance,
In and out of my field of vision.
Taunting me,
Telling me who’s in the lead,
Turning each and every detail into a race to the finish line.
Who am I to say?
Did I win?
Or did I lose?
The vital question.
But why does it matter?
Why should it?
Yet,
Somehow,
Those numbers arrange.
They form a number board in the corner of my vision.
They tally the score,
Telling me who is in the lead.
But that number board doesn’t know the whole story,
Only the bits and pieces,
That it has stolen from my thoughts.
I try to not let it touch what is mine to think about,
Not to judge
But,
None the less,
The data is collected,
The game is won.
All bets are off,
And the winner leaves triumphant,
Smiling,
After another days victory.
