We both knew
One night I asked you what love was and you told me,
"Something you can't go a day without thinking about."
I wanted so bad to argue with you right then
because I think about a lot of people and I do not love them.
I replied, that it was "Something you care for."
Because I care for you, not for those other people.
but I don't know if you knew.
You then said,
"Something you wanna spend every day with."
I may seem selfish,
Only because I could literally spend every moment with you,
and no one but you.
But I didn't think you knew.
"Love is when you tell someone something bad about yourself
and yet they like you more for it."
In a way, I was thanking you.
Thanking you for seeing flaws
and looking past them.
But I think you knew.
You said,
"Love is accepting the real him/her."
I replied,
"Love is noticing little things and remembering.
Love is listening and caring.
Love is comfort."
All things I try to do to please you.
But I think you knew.
You told me that
"Love is nervousness, jealousy, and over thinking."
Something we both do,
and we both knew.
The conversation ended when I quoted Thomas Merton.
"The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves,
And not to twist them to fit our own image.
Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them."
I didn't say I love you
And neither did you,
But I think we both knew.
