Anticipation

In the barrel it waits
Waiting for its next victim
Will it be worth it?
As I sit and think
Suspense building
I have no choice
Palms sweaty
This is for my country
Arms heavy
I grip the trigger

With a boom & a flash, I'm off
Whizzing through the air like heavy winds
Seeking a target
With which to connect
Emotionless
Without a care
Will I hit a wall
And ricochet pointlessly
Or will there be a thud
As I create a searing woundy
Through the intended target's flesh

Thud, Thud, Thud
My pulse
Did this really happen?
To me?
Out of nowhere
This can’t be
how?
What about my family?
Will they recognize me as a hero?
or as a loser?
That lost his Country
At least I don’t have to suffer like this anymore
Thud, Thud, Thud
My pulse
The last thing I hear.
