The Old Dirt Path
He walks alone in the woods
Down an old dirt path
Ingrown with grass and weeds
Surrounded by nothing but nature and wildlife
He walks on silently, alone
He walks on determined, sad
Don’t go down that path, he said
I should’ve gone down the other one
The earth shakes, trees fall
The man is trapped
Well, I can’t turn back now, he says
I’ll have to keep going forward
So the man walks on
The man walks on
Shoulders hunched, depressed
The man is worried, sad
What if I lose my way he says
What if I never leave the forest
What if I’m attacked, what will I do
I should’ve gone down the other path
The man stops
I can’t go on he says
I’m lost, I can’t do this
With tears falling the man collapses
I’ll never get out of here
If only I had gone down the other path
Wait, stop, get up
The man cursed himself
I took another path
That was my choice
I took another path
And I will make it
Starting anew down the old dirt path
The man walks on
A light shines
He runs forward
He sees a house
And he realizes
Despite himself
He made it
He made it home
His home, where he can be free again
Where he can feel comfort again
And where he can tell others
That he is forever changed
Because he went down the old dirt path
