The Steps That Matter
The first step is always the hardest
The primal point of no return
One last glance back
A final "goodbye" "farewell" exchange
Then the initial step upon an onward road
Step follows step
Circumstance after circumstance
The journey grows in size as a ball of snow
Rolling down a slope
Collects snow as it goes
The journey becomes a story
Consisting of tale upon tale
As the journey follows
The ever onward road
Then comes the journey's climax
When all that was searched for
Was found
When all that was watched for
Was seen
And the last voyage the heart longs for
Is the return
All sails full for the homeward wind
He travels back by the path he trod
Smiling at the familiar faces
Remembering at familiar places
On the way home he follows his feet
For his heart is all along the way
Then when he arrives at the door
Where he took the initial step
He stands on the point of return
Stories he has
Friends he has
And changed he has
When he takes the final step
