Nicole

My grandmother wanted to name me Nicole,
After Nicole Kidman of course.
My mom wanted my name to be Ashley,
And my dad was not there.

I’ve always hated the name Nicole,
The thing I hated most was how my dad-
Would know me as Nicole.
Nicole was the name of a rich girl who’s life was easy
And full of love.

A pretty pink girl with knee socks and lace
Ms.Popular then Ms.America she will never stop.
“Nicole, Nicole!” they all shout,
But thats not what comes out.
No one sees the tall blonde dancer they were looking for;
Not the goddess of victory they were expecting.
Yet, she is victorious,
A survivor of poverty and people who don’t care.
Covered with scars,
And smiling ear to ear.
resiliant
She goes by Nikki.

This is just a plain old school assignment, but it meant a lot more to me. This piece gives the reader a sense of who I am and where I come from.

Kind of we used an excerpt from House on Mango Street as a inspiration.
