Tonight
I gaze into a well,
Its water pitch black
And sparkling with constellations.
My coins fall in
One by one,
Slowly drowning all of my dreams.
The air around me is all cold and mean.
My breath is frozen
So that when I cough
Tiny shards of ice tumble out
And sparkle in the pale moonshine.
I wrap my scarf around my neck
As tight as a noose.
I let my bare hands fall into the depths of
my pockets.
“DEAR LORD WHOM I DON'T AT ALL UNDERSTAND,
A HOT CUP OF FORBIDDEN APPLE CIDER IS ALL THAT I NEED.”
It gets colder.
I cough harder
And slower
And sadder.
I cough,
I cough,
I cough,
I cough up stars.
