A boy who lives a carefree life of happiness and gold;
A boy who lives in poverty, their two lives interfold.
Two young men driven far away,
And sent out from their homes.
A tale of life, and war, and tears,
And secrets left untold;
They find each other, and rejoice, as if they’re friends of old.
And only he, the young man says, in petticoats and vests,
Can chase away my loneliness, with stories he tells best.
And only he, the young man says, in rags and outfit striped,
Can chase away this darkness, and replace it with light.
Then one day at their rendezvous, the rich one gives a sigh,
And speaks of how they cannot play, and he cannot reason why!
Replies the boy in coat of stripes, that this is not the case;
There is a hole that’s just his size, and then they can speak face to face.
So little son of the Nazi one, climbs through the wire gate,
And rushed off with his only friend, not knowing of his fate.
Arm in arm, the two boys march, when soldiers give command,
And when lost in the darkness, they do not leave each other’s hand.
It is rushed across the papers: “The commandant’s son is dead!”
But they do not miss the other boy, just another beaten head.
A boy who lives a carefree life of happiness and gold;
A boy who lives in poverty, their two lives interfold.
