Time to Figure it out
Everyone thinks they've got it figured out
My grandmother says to me
In the backseat of the Honda I think to myself
As her and Papa hum along to the radio
About how all the girls, high school or middle
Believe they know life, love, heart ache and pain
With their caked on faces, leggings and hair products
They parade around like experienced women of twenty or so
Thinking they've got it figured out.
Freshman crying over lost love and the fear they’ll never feel it again
I find some of it humorous even, how heart break is
Your fourteen year old boyfriend dumping you
After one long emotional month of dating.
And social medias, accessories and new technologies
Pain is your mother forbidding you to attend a party
That you're crush will be at.
I look at her, with her eyes intently on the road and ponder
No one wants to be a child
All so eager to grown up
The car stops at some store we always go to on Wednesdays
I never think to look at the name.
The doors open and I gaze at everyone in the aisles and think
Recently dealing with a break up, I'll admit to fully believing the world was over.
But I now know it wasn’t
My grandparents are a few feet ahead of me
Their steps in time, and their small pale hands wrapped tightly around each other.
They've got it figured out
I bet they never fought over text
Or been a part of some huge drama
I can see why everyone wants this
But no one sees how all good things take time
And can't be obtained in an instant, when you're feeling lonely
And desperately need affection or reassurance
Jumping on the back of their cart, I think to myself
Who knows the world behind the caked faces and skin tight clothing
I certainly don't
They've seen a different side of life than I have
Their own heart breaks and pain
That I can't look upon and judge with unknowing eyes
I don't have it figured out yet
But maybe I don't need to
I am young
