Generation of Hope
My morning stroll brings me pleasant surprises
Birds chirp nearby as the orange sun arises
A butterfly flutters, showing its wings
Squirrels chase each other around the kid’s swings.
To my left, tulips bloom in every bright color
On my right, the rose petals are not any duller.
I stop at a bench to sit down for my lunch
When behind me I hear a most sickening crunch.
I turn towards the noise and see to my horror,
Men hacking down trees, shaking earth to it core.
The playful squirrels scatter, and birds fly away.
Knowing home’s gone for the rest of their days
Depressed, I get up and continue my walking
When I come ‘cross a pond that’s water is shocking
The color’s not blue, but dirt-brown you see
And garbage on the edge comes up to my knee.
I start to cry soft as I think and step back.
What if one day, Earth’s not green but black?
I run ‘way in tears over what my world’s becoming.
Collapsing on the grass, I hear small footsteps drumming
I raise my head slowly and see pictures of hope,
A group of kids picking up trash by the slope.
One asks if I’d like to get in on the fun
So I slide on some gloves and join them in the sun.
When we’re done picking up our species’ junk
I smile back on the kids while I load up my trunk.
As long as there’s kids like these keep helping our earth,
The world will soon see a generation’s rebirth.
