Guardian Angel
I hear your whimpers through the walls at night
I see your eyes glaze over every morning
I wonder at the number of tears you shed, darling
I watched as his hand struck mercilessly across your face
Over and over again
I hear your words of regret, guilt
I see your jaw clench in terror
I wonder at the number of tears you shed, darling
I watched as you hid all the cuts and bruises
Over and over again
You hear his screams of rage
Your eyes shine with that glaze of love and shameful waters
Your diary now holds the number of tears you shed, darling
Your body still aches with the pain of his doing
Over and over again
You hear your own agonized apologies, as if from someone else’s lips
Your eyes fade in and out of oblivion
You write down the number of tears you shed, darling
You yelp every time you feel his fists
Over and over again
I try to help as he withers away your innocence
Over and over again
I listen to your pained pleading voice
Over and over again
I try to be like a guardian angel should, to get you out of this mess somehow
Over and over again
Yet no matter what
I still hear your whimpers
Through the walls at night
