On My Own
The wind blows steadily with the breaths I take
and my skin develops the scent of the poppies in which I lie.
I think of you as I watch a momma bird push her baby bird out for her first flight
and they fly together at her
ultimate success.
But it saddens me to see her fly away from the flight she has created,
for that newly independent bird is now lonely,
with no one to catch her if her wings lose strength.
I will forever value the time you gave as my momma bird.
I close my eyes and wish you were again lying next to me in this open field.
