For Cody
He ran around and played all day
A twinkling gleam in his eye
He just turned eleven years today
And he accepted what was handed to him without asking why
Months had passed since that joyous day
And he still kept his blissful smile
Even when blues skies had turned to gray
He climbed trees in the rain with flawless style
His friends know him for his benevolent personality
Never ceasing to let everyone in
Always having a strong Christian spirituality
Always greeting someone with a grin
As days turned into weeks,
His smile began to fade
The days grew quite bleak
His life was in the shade
It seemed as if the earth stood still
The day they found he had cancer
The silent death took those against their will
Its source, there was no answer
His hospital bed became his playground
As jungle gyms, he could not climb
His struggle for life never ceases to confound
The silent angels who pray by his side
Dreadful tumors soon took away
His once familiar smile
Seems like all there is to do is pray
Yet he accepted what was handed to him without asking why
