Falling
Falling back,
Into the hated abyss,
The one from which few climb,
No net with strength to break the fall,
No arms to wait at deepest point,
To cushion a plummet so deep and great,
Nothing waiting to guide or help,
The path back to the light,
Which glimmers high above,
Tempting, taunting, and out of reach,
Just slipping, sliding,
Down the walls, if escape is on the mind,
No ladder here,
‘Tis futile,
All ways lead to the end,
Time cannot be turned back,
But marches onward always,
Inexorable,
And the pit at the bottom gapes in wait,
To devour those who fall along the way,
Because death does not wait,
And so, why waste a day,
Fighting the inevitable?
For there is no force,
Not great or small,
To drag you from your free-fall.
