"Have you ever been hurt and the place tries to heal a bit, and you just pull the scar off of it over and over again." - Rosa Parks

When we were young, we knew nothing,
Just to be afraid of the dark,
We hid under our blankets and owned nightlights,
And tried conjuring light from the smallest static spark.

The monsters in our closets,
And underneath our beds,
Would lurk in the night and whisper to us,
Corrupting the dreams in our heads.

They’d take our delicate sanity,
And threaten it in their claws,
Only children caught sight of the destruction,
And the adults would laugh at them in awe.

We look back and question this fear,
Wondering why the idea of monsters was so wrong,
It’s just the fact that we grew up and realized,
The monsters were in us all along…

The inspiration for this came to me after watching Monsters inc. in school. I took the childlike idea and turned into a mental illness (such as schizophrenia, demonic possession, psychopathy, etc.)and symbolism poem. It can also be interpreted literally and as peer pressure where teems and eve adults make bad decisions affecting their lives (smoking, drugs, alchohol, etc.).
