Brown limbs create mazes
Only the rabbits could conquer
As the shivering spines
Of dead saplings
Blend in together
Creating one big trunk

The murky water separates us
Snaking through islands
Of dead leaves and clumpy mud
We toss rocks with the hope
That we will see them disappear

A goose waddles towards the water
Hesitant to dip her toes
Into the running brown
Of the river's mysterious, Welcoming edge
Her pebble eyes seem so small
As she watches me watch her

His fingers, pink with contrast
Of fall's cold and blood's warmth
Take mine as their own
The goose merges into the water
Like a car on a four lane highway

The fireflies come out
His fingers are so warm
