Peace in Broken Pieces
Staring down at the article before me,
I look right through it
It’s nothing I haven’t seen before
Nothing I haven’t heard of
This newspaper
Is no news to me
Homicides, suicides, genocides,
Wars breaking out at every
Disagreement
Our world is in pieces
And why wouldn’t it be?
How can we make peace
With whole other countries
When we can’t even make peace
Within our own
For some reason,
We seem to think that we have to fight
And compete
To survive
We fight with the air we breathe,
Polluting it mercilessly
We fight with the food we eat,
Killing off nutrients in produce
And then sacrificing unwilling livestock
We fight with Mother Earth,
Destroying all that she’s given us
We fight with ourselves
Praying that ethics
Will shine through
But until then
The killing continues
People
Plants
Animals
Don’t you realize?
That’s our family dying
They’re dying
It amazes me,
Yet disgusts me
How difficult it is
To set aside our differences
And get along
But by killing each other,
We’re only killing ourselves
And our chances at peace
Because we are all one
Walking the earth together
But at different paces
When we learn to love our earth
And all who we share it with,
Maybe then
Peace will have all its pieces back
