The Christmas Party
Barren frigid land hugs this frosty house
For miles, as far as a bird can see,
Icy streets and frozen blades of grass
The occasional rundown farmhouse
Here on this night in this frosty house
Warm bodies fill the room and sip eggnog
The live heart beats make the room pulse
The loud voices laugh and make the frosty house spin
The carousing people singing and dancing
I know something they don’t
I know joy is hiding on my doorstep
Unable to come in
And all I can think as I sit on the paisley loveseat
With an untouched cup of hot chocolate
In a hand painted ceramic mug
Burning my hands but no I can’t let it go
Glazed bovine eyes searching for something
Beyond the cracked window pane
Outside the snow falls around this frosty house
Covering your sweet and precious body in a blanket of ice.
