Those Cars
You stand on the street corner
You wait for the light to turn green
Or for a friend to meet you
Or for your dad to pick you up
As you glance up for a second
The cars whiz past you
Blowing your hair
And drying your eyes
Their windows are dark
But not all are dark enough
For you not to see inside
Do we just see a Prius
Or a Mercedes
Or an Odyssey
Or do we wonder
About the drivers
Is someone making a business call
Completely consumed in her work life
Never at the lacrosse games
Or the talent shows
And driving once again to a meeting
Is someone crying behind the wheel
Completely crushed by the tragedy of the heart
Never again to hold her close
Or kiss her sweet and gentle lips
And wondering how he can ever love again
Is someone coming to the curb to pick up a child
Completely flustered with the events of the day
Or in need of a long-overdue relax
And with more than one destination in her mind
Oh…
Hi Mom
