To Cross the River
Far away
Almost out of sight
Beyond my blindness
Is the other side of the river
It is there
That you are waiting
But the water flows swift and deep
A collection of accusing stares
And shouts heard at midnight
That will sweep me off my feet
If I try
To cross the river
Its depths are murky dark
With the bile in your throat
And the fires
Blazing whiteness
Mothers’ cries
Neverending drumbeats of war
These are the currents of the river
That will snatch me up and away
To forever gone and lost
If I try
To cross the river
And though I feel you waiting
I cannot cross
The barrier
That is the river
Until there comes a time
When I can find the courage
To gaze into its troubled waters
And make time to see
That it is but a stream
