That Summer
they walk along the docks
walking so close that their
finger touch and their
eyes connect
and
they talk about what
they’ll do that summer
since they’re in paradise
and
they wonder
how long this summer love will last
they walk along the shore
the sand crunching under their feet
the smell of the ocean spraying off them
his hand lay on her hip
her hand lay on his
and
they watch dawn’s early light
fade into another day of summer together
and
they wonder
how long this summer love will last
they walk along the boardwalk
people rushing by them
as the rain starts
to fall upon them
their fingers interlock
their eyes faded into each other’s
their lips touch and
right there they know they don’t want this summer to end
but
they still wonder
how long this summer love will last
they lay there on the glistening boat
the ocean’s spray splashing
up the side and
the sun’s rays beating down on them
their hands lay hand in hand
and the faint
squeals of dolphins can
be heard from afar
and
they wonder
how long this summer love will last
they sit there on the porch
rocking back and forth
on the old wooden swing
the fire flies glowing their neon color around them
she leans on to his shoulder and
drifts into sleep knowing
that summer was
almost at its end
and
they wonder
how long this summer love will last
they walk to the cove
as the last day of summer fades into
a lush sunset of
reds oranges yellows and blues and
now they must part their separate ways
knowing that this was summer love
one they’ll never forget because
it was TRUE summer love
and
now they wonder
how much they’ll miss “that summer”
