Behind the Block
I’m behind the block again.
But it’s not the same.
I’m not in my swimsuit, just a warm up.
I’m not listening to coach for last minute instructions,
I’m listening to the announcer calling the winners.
My stomach isn’t filled to the brim with butterflies, it’s filled with glee.
I’m not anxious, just happy
Not scared, just proud
Not planning my race, planning my celebration.
It’s different this time, good different.
I arose onto the block
“Kiley, Kiley!” they bellowed
Cameras flash, screams arise around the stands
I feel the best at this moment
I’m more than on top of a block; I’m on top of the world.
The sunlight shines on me as the other winners are announced,
A personal spotlight.
My team cheers me on, even though I don’t need cheering up.
I’m not getting in the water
I’m receiving a medal.
“Winning the bronze medal in the 50 breaststroke,
From the Clarkston Seawolves
Kiley F.!”
I bow my head as it is bestowed around my neck.
A white ribbon, a brown medal it’s not very colorful, but it’s very important.
Bronze around my neck I give a victory wave
I grin at my family, I beam at my coach, I smile at my team.
I’m on the block but it’s different
I’m not a racer,
I’m a winner.
