The Lighthouse Keeper
I am a sea creature,
You are the lighthouse keeper,
watching the storm brew, and watching me
thrash at the shores, spilling over the sides
to your land where the water flows
back to the sea
And I am breathing this water like
salt in your lungs,
I am waiting for riptides
to tow me away or to carry you
under.
You are searching for a calm, for a swell, for a light to go
On
So that you do not fade away
And I am the thunder that rattles the floorboards
In the house where you sleep and I’m coming
For you in the night while you’re fighting
to not let the storm
blow you over.
And there is a tidal wave
Chasing us down to the dawn-breaking silence
Of high seas on fire
To the beat of a lightning storm,
Trembling inside you and drowning
In me
And I’m fighting to keep my head held strong
While tides tug me under
And hurricanes tear me apart
And if I start to drown here, don’t come down
From your lighthouse.
Watch this current drag me under
Let it swallow me whole
Let it take me away
You see, I cannot live with you on land
And I don’t want to love you
More than the ocean.
