Some people may say I am from a simple town
A town called Lindenwold
A town in New Jersey
But this is not where I am really from
I am from a family that cares
I have a family that loves each other
I guess I am one of the lucky ones
I am from a place that is not perfect
While people die on the streets every day
We don’t care

Why am I from this place where we are defined by what we wear
By how we look

Not by who we are
I am from a place where we don’t realize what we say to each other
Or how it hurts them
We just say it
I am from a place where I have my own voice
But people ask me to refrain from using it
So I remain quiet
I am from a place where talent is only “talent” if you play sports
But I am a writer, a musician
So am I without talent?
No
I am from a place where I will make a difference
I am from a place where I will be known
So I decide today that I will not remain quiet
