Lies.
What is truth?
I was told Santa was real.
He had a red button nose and jolly laugh.
I could hear the thump of reindeer on the roof.
I was told to stop writing him letters.
I guess he didn’t want to hear from me that year.
Mommy quit baking cookies for him.
What is truth?
I was told every thing was okay.
My parents were happy, when they were together.
They never let me see them argue.
I was told to stop asking questions.
I guess it was my fault.
Daddy left making a bang, without so much of a word said.
What is truth?
I was told we looked perfect.
I liked his warm hugs and gentle kisses.
He called me just to say good night.
I was told we needed a break.
I guess he loved another girl.
People spread rumors like they’re peanut butter.
I ask, once again, what is truth?
No one will tell me.
I’m old enough to know?
It’s hard to trust anyone.
But, I’m stronger now, strong as a tree.
I know what the word sorry means, but
I was told too many lies.
