as if you are infinite
Near to my hand is my heart because I hold it on my chest.
I can’t breathe and your face is like a carving in my retinas as
I try to blink it away but it remains.
It remains like the creases in my palm
And the dark around my thoughts when I try to
Picture this as anything but my favorite dream.
Softly your eyelids would fold as I would
Drift into the best night of
Stars shining down on our faces,
One in a billion.
One in a billion we are proof to the weak
And the strange and the ones who have spent a lifetime
Begging for an escape or crater in the air around noon,
Around dinner,
Around the time the children fall asleep and the parents
Stay up for hours arguing or not talking
At all.
As if you are infinite,
It remains like the creases in my palm
And the dark around my thoughts when I try to
Picture this as anything but my favorite dream.
As if you are eternity,
I would dig my nails into your skin until I become a part of it.
I know it sounds hurtful but I swear I would kiss your tears away and
When you told me to stop I would tell you I couldn’t and I would
Try to be quiet but I can’t stop screaming at you like
A reflection in the mirror,
Something so close but I feel I will never touch.
I can touch the glass but I can’t feel your face.
I can stare at you and decipher you and try to understand you
All night long,
And still you will stare back and I can’t feel your face.
I hope one day you’ll be on a plane and I’ll be on the ground.
I hope one day I’ll be in a boat and you’ll be on the shore.
I hope one day the landing strip or the boarding dock becomes
The day that floats above the water that has weighed it down so,
The day that floats and rises and gives me a chance to breathe,
As if it is infinite.
