The Mysterious Mind of an Autistic

I am an “autistic,”
A person with certain disabilities.

I always thought of myself different to my society.
From my sensitivity to being touched,
To my eyes avoiding other eyes,
It shows I’m not like most others.
I sometimes thought if I wasn’t from this planet,
And somehow, there were some survivors,
Including me,
Who escaped from the apocalypse on that planet.
We then crashed down to this planet,
And that we feel so sorry about what happened to our planet,
That we keep acting like
As if we were still on it.
It’s like we are following a religion,
As if we were in our own little world.
On this world,
It’s like we speak two different languages,
They speak a variety of languages, such as English,
While people like me speak autistic.
We have a difficult time communicating with our new society,
Because of our conditions.
Our conversations usually end with failure,
Whether it’s irrelevant to the subject,
Or not listening to what we were told.
If only we spoke their language,
Our lives could be better.

Even though we autistics can’t communicate well,
And act in a strange way,
We are no different than any other human,
On this planet.
It’ll seem like we’re from another planet,
But we still are one-hundred percent human.
They think we are mentally ill,
But there’s something they don’t know about us.
Autism is not a disease,
It’s just a way of living.

If the humans created a cure for autistic behavior,
I will not take it,
Because autism is who I am.
If I were to change myself in any other way,
It wouldn’t be part of my character.
Even though I’m considered different to this society,
There are many people who are also considered different.

I am an “autistic,”
A person with certain disabilities,
And I’m proud of it.

What a beautiful poem! It helped me better understand how people with autism feel. I loved the metaphors that compared autism to living on another planet, professing another religion, or speaking another langiage--but then came back to the reality that we are all different from one another in our own ways.

Well said William, there is no need to 'fix' you; you're perfect just as you are.
