Illegal
This isn't the 1700's
We're told that we are
Illegal...
74 countries that won't let us enter;
Without Jail.
That isn't normal
Imagine, not showing or telling
The person you love;
That you love them?
How cruel can you be?
To harm someone for not marrying the "correct person"
Based off of a book written from the
6th-5th century.
That isn't normal...
Nevertheless, you say we are a disease that can be-
Fixed?

Hi my name is Carleigh. A bit about me is that I am 13 years old, apart of the LGBTQIA+, and I love the bands Bikini Kill, Cavetown, Sparta, Mother Mother and Pavement. My poetry consists mostly of things that make me angry though I do dabble in silly things as well.
This piece was written in my creative writing class. My teacher had shared this with my class because he and his LGBTQ+ daughter “were taken aback by the brilliance” (seriously that’s what he said!). My teacher was unsure if it would harm my wellbeing if he read it to the class but his daughter brought up the point that for the kids that are LGBTQ, it would really show that his class is a safe place. When I heard this, I was so happy because my peers heard how I felt. But the fact that my teacher was concerned about my safety made me so angry. Why would my safety be threatened because of the poem? That was the main reason of the poem: to point out how messed up it was.
