is from mccabe’s.

i had a guitar

but i never played it.

i became the ukulele girl.

ukulele girl, oh ukulele girl

play us a song.

the man at the store—

his name was dan, i think—

drilled a special knob onto one side

to attach a strap

so i could play right

standing upright.

ukulele girl, oh ukulele girl,

play us a song.

dan gave me a purple pick—

it’s on the house, he said—

for the day i’d raise the bar

and play my guitar.

ukulele girl, oh ukulele girl,

play us a song.

i played ukulele

but never guitar

because i was not very good

and so i would

play guitar when i was better.

ukulele girl, oh ukulele girl,

play us a song.

my blue ukulele

hangs untouched on my wall

as i am the guitar girl now

and you were never there to see it,

and you were there to  hear it.

ukulele girl, oh ukulele girl,

play us a song.
