we weren't close
People never understood when I said that
we weren't close
because we spent nearly every second together
and whenever someone asked where I was
it would always be that
I was with you.
What I couldn't put in to words was
the marvel that you could spend every breath with someone
and yet still not know them at all
because you couldn't remember
the type of olives I liked
or my favorite color
and perhaps those things shouldn't have bothered me
and you might say that they are obsolete
but as the child that no one cared enough for to be
chosen,
I just wanted someone to choose me
to care about me
to care enough about me
to make time
to want to know those things
about
me.
I just wanted someone to want to know me.
People never understand when I say that
we weren't close,
and I can't help but envy their naïveté
