I like being a child.

I eat cotton candy,

I scarf down watermelon

and red velvet cupcakes!

I like my strawberries

with whipped cream,

and I pick the sunflowers

that grow on the side of my house.

I don’t clean up my mess,

I spend the summers at camp

making bracelets and playing

“Fish out of Water”.

But when I’m older,

I’ll wear mom jeans

and drink wine by

the embers of the dying fire.

I'll play the cello so well

You’ll never believe me when I say,

“I still love cotton candy.”

That’s what I’ll do

When I’m older.

The author's comments:

This piece was compiled using a random selection of paint swatches. The colors were labeled with words like "watermelon" or "cotton candy". It was challenging, however once I developed my story, the words came together beautifully. I think of this as the bittersweet feeling of growing up and still having those childhood memories.
