The Secret
I looked over at my faithful friend
Glancing at her knowing smile
Peeking at her knitted brows
Each feature hinting a secret
The secret my companion held between her lips
Concealed words rooted down by our promise
As our secret strand linked us together
We vowed not to snip our welded string apart
To not tell where our hearts dwelled
Or where the endless skies of our dreams lodged
For the fear that they might find us
Seeking refuge in another’s abode
“This is our hope,” Papa had said. “Our only hope,
Where the heavens shower over the hardened Earth.”
Driven through madness
Driven through perilous evenings, filled with piercing shrieks
We lifted our troubles together, my friend and I
A single spider-silk thread uniting us
The strand of our secret we held above our hearts
The secret, a slice of our past, present, and future
The secret we clutched in our twinkling eyes
For our past, present, and future
