I have seen beautiful things
I have seen beautiful things before.
A sunrise in winter,
with the geese still laying down
on frost covered grass,
or the subtle pigments of a butterfly wing.
I have seen so many beautiful things.
Doors being held and smiles shared.
I’ve heard sounds of laughter.
I’ve witnessed time’s passing
during its best moments,
and sometimes its worst.
These eyes are used to wonder.
Underneath long lashes
they refract light in stars and sparkles.
They have seen rainbows
and the puffiest clouds,
they’ve seen rain pouring down
and sun shining on snowy ground.
I’ve seen enough to last me a lifetime,
each view a wonder—
at least that was what I thought.
Until I saw your eyes,
brown and beautiful,
leaving me speechless,
deeper than the Great Lakes,
more vibrant than any autumn leaf.
I have seen beautiful things before,
but in this moment I’ve realized
that there is truly so much more.
