She’s shy, and quite

bookish, mild-mannered

and above all,

She’s beautiful.

Beautiful, but she doesn’t try

Beautiful, but she doesn’t know it

Because a woman is only as good as she is attractive

And only as attractive as she is insecure

Beautiful because how could anything else about her possibly matter if she wasn’t?

If her eyes didn’t sparkle,

If her hair wasn’t silky,

If her nose wasn’t exactly the right size,

How could she possibly be loved?

Its okay to be smart,

quick-witted

powerful,

But only if your face is

perfectly symmetrical.

Only if

You have just the right amount of curves

and

long eyelashes.

I want characters who look like people.

I want characters who are not defined by the presence or absence of attractiveness.

I want to authors who understand that we won’t mind if the characters don’t look like models,

because we don’t either.

The author's comments:

As a reader, it frustrates me that almost all female characters are beautiful. There's nothing wrong with conventional attractiveness, but I hate how it's seen as a defining characteristic. I want to read about characters who aren't gorgeous, and love stories wherein a person falls for someone completely because of their personality. That's just my opinion though, its cool if you disagree. :)

wow. this poem is good. also, i totally agree with what you're saying with how everybody is so beautiful in books, when in the real world, us regular people aren't like that.
