Calm Down!
What men are...
Men are black suits
Business and
Control
Are power
And blue
And head-of-tables
They are leaders
And geniuses
And entrepreneurs
Are builders
And drivers
And money-makers
Are responsible
And dedicated
Are persuasive
They are wiser
Bolder
Finer
Worthy and
Right
Are carriers
And successors
And kings
Are workers
And witty
And loud
This is men.
What women are...
Women are spring flowers
Flowing dresses
Pink
Short skirts
Are perfume
And makeup
And long hair
Are gentle
And dim
And careless
They are dotted aprons
Sweet voices
Sexy
Household chores
Wash the dishes
Vacuum
And cook
Women are mothers
And gossipers
And nannies
They are quiet
And obedient
And brisk
High strung and pushy
Neat and skinny
Smiles and pretty
This is women.
What it is like to be female:
Some countries you can be beaten for just walking alone
The history books do not mention you
Some parents do not want you
You can be sold for the pleasure of men--
Some schools do not let you in--
Kids is your only reason for existence--
You will always be outdistanced--
By a man...
What it is like to be female:
For instance--
You body becomes a distraction--
Your abilities are only a fraction--
Of a man’s...
Your intelligence becomes lesser--
Your interests should only be about what’s in the dresser--
You are raped
And discouraged
And harassed--
And your life is many times harder
in contrast--
To a man’s...
Tears become weakness--
Focus on your sleekness--
Math becomes too tough--
Nothing is ever enough--
You are simply a wife--
This isn’t your life--:
It’s a man’s...
You’re ignored--
Adored--
Implored--
Stupid-- and
Persistent--
Muted-- an
Assistant--
Nothing but an ornament--
An adornment--
To a man...
What it is like to be female:
You are shoved from the way
...
someday

The first two parts of this piece contrast the models of a woman and man set by society. The third part expresses the reality of these models that is typically ignored. The gender roles encouraged by our world can seem harmless and easy at first glance; however, they are indeed very detrimental. I hope this poem invites you to think and consider everything in a way not enforced by how you were raised or how the media presents it, but under your own thoughtful interpretation. The title represents what the response to being vocal about issues sometimes is.
