If I am remembered
If I am remembered, let it be with grace.
I've tumbled through the tumult,
landed among the rubble
of all that I tore down in my reign.
Cast aside the gilded cage;
these wings that have never learned to fly
spiral in a free fall—
I don't know which way is up.
Chaos clambers round and round
as I near the ground.
I'm praying for my legacy;
History have mercy—
grant forgiveness I do not deserve—
for all the wrong I've done
I never lost my heart.
I festered in my guilt, and grieved with every lie;
Monster I became, but still with stars in my eyes.
And everything I did,
It was for a dream—
my cruelty did have purpose,
no matter what it seemed.
As my story comes to an end
please do not forget,
I began a little girl
with a heart the world did break
(starry-eyed and curly-haired,
hands as pure as gold).
And for the girl I was,
before my hands were stained with blood,
I plead; If I am remembered,
let it be with grace.
